New varieties like the Honey Crisp and Antique apples like the Arkansas Black

For five generations, the Clark family of Ashfield Massachusetts have been growing apples in an area of town known as Apple Valley. As a commercial grower, the orchard plants some of the most popular apples like the Mcintosh and Granny Smith, and also some of the newest like the Honey Crisp, or Fortune. They also continue to raise some varieties that date back for centuries like the Black Gilliflower or the Esopus Spitzenburg. Now with over 50 varieties, the orchards of Apple Valley offer the widest variety of fresh apples in gift packs to be found anywhere.

In a survey done in 1869, over 1,850 distinct varieties of apples were found to be growing in the United States. Since that time, hundreds more have been developed. Nurseries, orchards and universities have been working on new varieties continuously. The goals are many including taste, resistance to disease, long storage life, and more. Many of these varieties are no longer commercially viable in a wide market, but they offer a wonderful glimpse into the tastes of the past and are only available here.
